Two Teachers, Two Diagnoses: Carol & Kay’s Shared Journey with Scleroderma
Sometimes life brings together people in unexpected ways. For Carol and Kay, their connection began in the classroom—two dedicated teachers working side by side, sharing laughter, teamwork, and a passion for helping students thrive. Years later, that bond would take on a deeper meaning when both women were diagnosed with scleroderma.

From Classroom Partners to Lifelong Friends
Carol and Kay first met while teaching in the same district. Eventually, they ended up in adjoining classrooms, team‑teaching special education and middle school science. Their collaboration was seamless—jokes they shared often went over students’ heads, but their energy made even the toughest end‑of‑day classes fun and productive.
Carol’s Diagnosis
In 2016, Carol received her scleroderma diagnosis. The disease progressed quickly, forcing her to leave teaching and focus on managing her health full‑time. Thanks to strong union support, she was able to keep her insurance, which made a difficult transition a little easier.
Kay’s Diagnosis
Not long after, Kay called Carol with news that stunned them both: she, too, had been diagnosed with scleroderma. Initially misdiagnosed with “sine scleroderma,” Kay knew from watching Carol’s journey that her symptoms didn’t match. Her experience highlights an important truth—everyone’s journey with scleroderma is different. In fact, Carol and Kay’s symptoms are nearly opposite, underscoring the complexity of this rare autoimmune disease.
Searching for Answers
Their shared diagnoses raised questions: could there be environmental factors at play? Kay, ever the science teacher, even ran her own statistics after also facing breast cancer. The numbers showed no unusual cancer rates in their school building, leaving the mystery unsolved. Both women agree—more research is desperately needed to understand scleroderma’s causes and triggers.
Stress and Life Events
Like many autoimmune patients, Carol and Kay reflect on stressful life events that may have played a role. For Kay, it was her battle with breast cancer. For Carol, it was the heartbreak of divorce and then the loss of her ex‑husband to early-onset dementia. While no one can say for certain, both women recognize how trauma and stress can impact health.
A Friendship That Endures
Through it all, Carol and Kay’s friendship has remained a source of strength. What began as a partnership in teaching has grown into a shared journey of resilience, advocacy, and support. Their story reminds us that while scleroderma is unpredictable and often isolating, connection and community make the path forward brighter.
